Geography Skills Geography Skills uses computer animation to illustrate the tools and techniques that geographers use to interpret the physical world. Clearly and engagingly, the series introduces students to several methods of map creation and interpretation, gathering data, and solving geography problems. Its skill-based approach to training students in the representation of the real world makes it an ideal classroom teaching aid.

Map Symbols BPN 227301 This animated program teaches an understanding of map legends, and the techniques of identifying and locating information through different sizes and shapes of symbols. (9:35) Map Grids BPN 227302 This simple scientific method of determining location — by means of a map grid — is described, and its advantages and disadvantages outlined. (9:35) Latitude BPN 227303 Using the equator as the starting point, this program shows how the Tropic of Cancer, Arctic Circle, Tropic of Capricorn, and Antarctic Circle are measured. (9:35) Longitude BPN 227304 The lines of longitude are related to local times, using the prime meridian and the sun. (9:35) Distance BPN 227305 Calculating distances on the landscape and using map scales are explored in this program. (9:35) Graphing BPN 227311 Cartography — the science of drawing charts, diagrams, and maps — and the skill of graphing are presented.
